Welcome to WHA Secondary School

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Secondary Schools (Middle School and High School) provides an exceptional, small town education to the 370 students it serves in grades 6 th – 12 th . Through our work with Dr. Robert Marzano in High Reliability Schools (HRS), we have earned a reputation as a safe and successful school.

Our goal is to take the principles of best practices, apply them to learning, and provide students with limitless opportunities to be college and career ready. Our small class sizes provide a relational environment where we connect with students and are able to personalize their learning. In addition, students are able to be an integral part of Walker-Hackensack-Akeley through the wealth of athletics, activities, clubs and programs that bring a sense of belonging and accomplishment to them.

Our staff cares about our students. They know by providing a whole-student experience to our learners, building positive relationships, and promoting a culture of success, our students will be prepared for anything.

Vocational Opportunities Annual Notification

Walker Hackensack Akeley school district offers a variety of vocational opportunities through the Business Education, Industrial Technology and Health Occupation Departments. The purpose of this notice is to inform students, parents, employees and the general public that these opportunities are offered regardless of race, color, national origin, sex or disability. Admission in the specific courses is determined by grade level, and in some cases, completion of prerequisite courses. WHA's Annual Pow Wow, held on May 21, was a wonderful celebration of culture, community, and tradition! We were honored to welcome three drum groups and dancers from visiting schools, making the day especially memorable.

Congratulations to our newly selected Pow Wow Royalty: 👑 Senior Brave – Justin French 👑 Senior Princess – Julia Kingbird 👑 Junior Brave – Charles Oothoudt Jr. 👑 Junior Princess – Torvi DeRoo

The Indian Education Department has received many compliments on both the Pow Wow and the beautiful regalia showcased throughout the event. Prior to the celebration, several students collaborated to create a video explaining the significance of the Pow Wow, along with expectations and etiquette, which teachers shared with their classrooms to help prepare students for the day.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's Pow Wow such a meaningful and successful event!

The Outdoor Skills class spent time this winter developing a guide of 50 local wild food sources that are available at different times of the year. It included fairly common ones like raspberries and blueberries, but also others that we may not see as food, like milkweed pods, cattails and various mushrooms.

While there aren't many wild edibles in the spring, the class managed to find all of their target species PLUS a special bonus! Just within the greater Walker area they found wild asparagus, ramps (wild leeks), ostrich fern fiddleheads and (black) morels.

As they were searching for morels in a young aspen habitat, Ms. Petersen commented to a student that it was exactly the type of habitat where she runs her brood pointing dog to locate woodcock chicks to band. Not 5 minutes later, another student yelled that he found a woodcock nest! The rest of the group made their way over there and found not only the hen doing a distraction display, but three 10-day old chicks!

Students were able to take their wild edibles home to share a great locally-foraged meal with their families.

It was a beautiful and productive day--a fabulous last field trip for some of our seniors!
